This is an unknown disease which spreads from the bites of mosquitoes and midgets that are infected with the oropouche virus. The country has recorded the first-ever deaths due to this particular virus. The two women who succumbed to the infection were both under the age of 30 years, according to the Brazil Health ministry.

According to reports, the symptoms experienced by these women due to this virus are very similar to dengue infection. Dengue is another mosquito-borne disease and its symptoms may be confused with oropouche virus.

What Is The Oropouche Virus That Caused Two Deaths In Brazil?

The oropouche virus was discovered first in Trinidad and Tobago in the year 1955. Its transmission takes place through infected mosquitoes and midgets. The virus spreads when the vectors bite humans. Experts say that the virus cannot transmit from one human to another. It is not contagious. The health authorities in Brazil are currently investigating reports of a possible transmission between pregnant women and their unborn children. The Pan American Health Orgnaisation in involved in this investigation. Officials and experts note that this virus could transmit from a pregnant woman to the foetus just like Zika virus.

Cases pertaining to this unknown orupouche virus has been reported from the following regions: South America, Caribbean and Central America. In the year 2024, the Brazilian Health Ministry has reported about 7,236 cases of this disease in the country.
