Galaxy Z Flip 6 might feature an IPS LCD cover display panel

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 brought a major upgrade in size for the cover display. The Z Flip 4 and Flip 3 had 1.9-inch cover displays that weren’t of much use, and Samsung addressed that by equipping the Flip 5 with a 3.4-inch cover display.

It’s been known for some time that the Galaxy Z Flip 6 will have a 3.4-inch cover display as well, but it looks like an important nugget of information may have flown under the radar: the Galaxy Z Flip 6 cover display might use an IPS LCD panel instead of a Super AMOLED panel.

It’s 2024, and LCD displays are no longer in vogue

This information comes from a leaked image that highlights some of the best Galaxy Z Flip 6 features. The image also includes the full spec sheet of the phone and lists the display technology for the second/cover display as IPS.

Galaxy Z Flip 6 IPS LCD display

If true, it would be a notable downgrade from the Z Flip 5, which sports a Super AMOLED panel for both of its displays. IPS LCD panels can’t match the contrast of OLED panels as they use a backlight and cannot shut off individual pixels to produce deep blacks, and they also tend to be more power hungry.

Granted, on a 3.4-inch screen, the lower power efficiency may not be a deal-breaker. But you will notice a difference in image quality, and considering Samsung is raising the price for both the Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip lineups this year, such a downgrade would be unacceptable.

However, it’s possible this information isn’t accurate. Galaxy Z Flip 6 rumors and leaks have been doing the rounds for months, but until today, we have seen no signs that indicate the Z Flip 6 has an IPS LCD cover display.

Thankfully, we’re less than a week away from Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event, so we will learn the truth soon enough.
