‘Opposition selective in criticising crimes against women’: PM Modi on Bengal assault video | India News

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a scathing attack on the opposition during his reply to the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. He accused them of displaying selective outrage over crimes against women and remaining silent on a video depicting a man brutally assaulting a couple in public.
In his speech, PM Modi expressed his disappointment, saying, “it is unfortunate for the country that even in sensitive matters, when politics comes into play, it causes immense pain to the citizens, especially women. The selective approach of the opposition towards atrocities against women is very concerning.”
The Prime Minister further criticized the opposition for their lack of response to the incident and accused them of selective outrage.
“I hear that even the prominent leaders have not expressed any pain in their words since yesterday. What could be a more shameful and tragic picture than this? Those who consider themselves to be very progressive women leaders have also remained silent because it is related to their political life or their party or state.”
“Therefore, the suffering of women is being ignored. Respected Chairman, I believe that when even prominent people overlook such matters, it causes pain to the country, and our mothers and sisters suffer even more,” he added.
PM Modi’s remarks comes after a purported video of the assault on the couple in North Dinajpur district’s Chopra over an alleged illicit relationship had gone viral on Sunday.
The assault took place in a public street in Chopra, Uttar Dinajpur district and a purported video of the incident shows a man beating up two people in the presence of onlookers. Police arrested the accused who has been identified as Tajmul Haque alias JCB.
The BJP alleged that the accused was close to Chopra MLA Hamidul Islam.
The TMC had condemned the incident, stating that the party does not support such activities.
