Doggett said in a statement that Joe Biden failed to expose Donald Trump and defend his accomplishments, urging the former to take the route of ex US President Lyndon Johnson, who at a different point and for different reasons made the call to withdraw.
“My decision to make these strong reservations public is not done lightly nor does it in any way diminish my respect for all that President Biden has achieved. I represent the heart of a congressional district once represented by Lyndon Johnson. Under very different circumstances, he made the painful decision to withdraw. President Biden should do the same.”
“Recognizing that, unlike Trump, President Biden’s first commitment has always been to our country, not himself, I am hopeful that he will make the painful and difficult decision to withdraw. I respectfully call on him to do so,” the Texas Congressman said in the statement.
Doggett’s statement followed after former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi acknowledged that questioning Biden’s performance is legitimate, pondering whether it was an isolated incident or indicative of a broader issue.
“I have not spoken to him since then, but it is a legitimate question,” Pelosi said, however adding that Biden remains sharp and knowledgeable about critical issues.
