National Film Awards are eagerly awaited by Indian cinephiles and considered the highest honour for Indian cinema. It spans across various demographics and brings much appreciated gems from different corners of India to notice. It also felicitates great performances of different actors and actresses. Even this year the competition was much heated and finally the names of the winners were announced.

The Malayalam film Attam won the award for best film, it was received highly by critics and fans and has brought great honour to Malayalam film industry. Notable for Bollywood lovers, Gulmohar won the best Hindi film award. Rishab Shetty from Kantara won the best actor award, although fans were speculating Vikrant Massey to win for 12th Fail, the committee seems to have decided to give the award to a non-mainstream movie. Mansi Parekh and Nithya Menen are to share the award for best actress, hearing fresh names reassures a great future for Indian cinema. Highly praised film Uunchai won best director and support actress award for Suraj Barjatya and Neena Gupta respectively. Fouja, KGF Chapter 2 and Kantara have also won different awards.
The 70th National Films award also brought many regional projects and artists to notice. It is refreshing to see more and more local and indie projects gain appreciation along with the mainstream ones. It only goes to show that there is a lot of untapped potential in terms of cinema in our country and the right kind of appreciation can bring the best for not only Indian audiences but the world.
