Legendary Indian captain and all-rounder Kapil Dev has lavished big praise on star Indian opening batter Shubman Gill for his superb show in the recently concluded Asia Cup 2023, which India won after crushing Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in the final played at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Sunday (September 17). In the 2023 edition of the Asia Cup, Gill finished as the leading run-getter. In six matches, with the help of one century and two fifties, the right-handed batter scored 302 runs, which came at an average of 75.50.
Gill’s form was a cause for concern coming into the Asia Cup 2023, but he gave a savage response from his bat to lead India to their record-extending eighth Asia Cup title triumph. Impressed by Gill’s show, Kapil, who led India to the win in the 1983 ODI World Cup , said that the youngster is the future of Indian cricket, and he is very proud to have a player of his ability in India.

“This is a youngster who we can look up to. He is the future of Indian cricket. Very very proud to have a player of that ability in India,” Dev was quoted as saying by PTI about Gill.

Gill will open the innings for India in the ODI World Cup 2023, along with skipper Rohit Sharma, who finished as the leading run-getter in the 2019 World Cup.

Speaking about India’s chances in the ODI World Cup 2023, the former all-rounder said that he believes India is ready to win the ODI World Cup at home, but he doesn’t want to put the favourite tag on the hosts as a lot would depend on luck.

“I think if we can come in the top four, that is more important, and then it will be about strokes of luck and everything. We can’t say right now that we are favourites; of course, our team is very good. The heart says something else, and the mind says no, we have to work very hard. I know our team; I don’t know about other teams, so I would say it is unfair for me to give a blank answer,” he said.

“As far as the India team is concerned, it is ready to play and win the championships… They should play passionately and enjoy themselves,” he added.
