It's usually around this time of year that many of us start to get more health conscious. Whether that comes from wanting to fit into last summer's clothes or wanting to get healthier so you can go do some physical summer activities like hiking, many will be looking to improve their diets.

One particular food has quite a number of health benefits, with nutritionists promoting it as a possible natural appetite suppressant - lentils. The humble lentil has a lot of health benefits, but one in particular is how it manages blood sugar levels.

Legumes in general have a low glycaemic index, reports BBC Good Food. This means it takes longer to break down and affects your blood glucose more slowly.

Food with a high glycaemic index, on the other hand, is not unhealthy per se, but can cause a spike in blood sugar. This includes sugary foods and soft drinks, white bread and rice, and potatoes.

Vegetarian chilli can be a great option

Wholegrain foods and legumes, with a low glycaemic index, can help you feel fuller for longer and control your appetite. Likewise, the high fibre content keeps you full. This can be helpful if you are trying to lose weight or become healthier.

If you're not a fan of lentils, any other beans, peas, or chickpeas are also a great option.

A low glycaemic index is not the be all and end all of nutrition, though, and it is important to have a balanced diet, reports the NHS.
