This common airway issue is characterized by chest tightness, coughing, shortness of breath, tissue remodeling, variable limitation of airflow, and wheezing. In as many as 10% of these patients, asthma is severe and uncontrolled, despite maintaining maximal optimal therapy. Severe asthma is a heterogeneous condition made up of eosinophilic asthma and other phenotypes; however, all patients with severe asthma experience a range of symptoms and medication adverse effects. Early diagnosis and effective management are critical to improve outcomes and quality of life.
