    • MI beat LSG by 81 runs in the IPL 2023 Eliminator clash on Wednesday (May 24).
    • MI successfully managed to defend a total of 182 runs.
    • For MI, Akash Madhwal picked up five wickets for five runs in 3.3 overs.
Mumbai Indians beat Lucknow Super Giants for the first time in four attempts on Wednesday (May 24) to secure a memorable win and a place in the second qualifier of the IPL 2023. The five-time champions beat LSG by 81 runs in the eliminator clash of the IPL 2023, which took place at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. MI, whose place in the playoffs was confirmed only after RCB suffered a defeat against Gujarat Titans in the final league stage match on Sunday (May 21), made a mockery of the LSG batting unit and dismissed them for just 101 runs in reply to an 183-run chase.
For the Rohit Sharma-led side, uncapped pacer Akash Madhwal accounted for the dismissal of five batters for just five runs in 3.3 overs. It is the new record for the best bowling figures by any uncapped bowler in the history of the IPL. After MI secured a big morale-boosting win over the Super Giants, MI skipper Rohit reserved a lot of praise for Madhwal and said that he had no doubt about his talent.

According to Rohit, Madhwal has been in the MI set-up for a couple of years, and hence he was confident that the Roorkee-based player would do the job for the team if he was persisted with.

“That is what we have done over the years. People don’t expect us to do what we have done, but we managed to,” Rohit said during the post-match presentation ceremony.

“He (Akash) was part of the team last year as a support bowler, and once Jofra (Archer) was gone, I knew he had the skills and the character to do the job for us,” he added.

Rohit, who is the most successful captain in the history of the IPL, highlighted that in the last so many years, many unknown players have come up and done well for MI and later went on to play for the national team as well.

“Over the years, we have seen many guys coming in from Mumbai Indians and playing for India. It is important to make them (the youngsters) feel special and make them feel part of the team; my job is to just make them comfortable in the middle,” the India captain said.

“They (youngsters like Madhwal) are very clear in their roles about what they need to do for the team, and that’s what you want,” he added.
